Munich: City of art and culture

August 27 2008: Munich has the reputation of being multifaceted cultural metropolis. Here, one can see an entire range of municipal activities in the field of art and culture. Over hundred museums, exhibition halls and galleries, orchestra, theatre as well as numerous cultural events and programmes that shouldn’t be missed are to be found in Munich.

If you are planning to visit Munich’s museums, the three art galleries called ‘Pinakotheken’, all located on Schwabing’s Barerstrasse, are an absolute must. One of the most important art galleries in the world, ‘Alte Pinakothek’, features more than 800 paintings by European masters from Tizian and Giotto to Rubens and Rembrandt. ‘Haus der Kunst’ hosts special exhibitions and retrospectives from various periods in the history of art. This art gallery is located on the southern edge of the English Garden and is an institution that attracts contemporary artists from all over the world.

If you have never been to an opera before, here is your opportunity to do so with Munich providing ample opprtunities for opera lovers. Deutches Theatre, one of the famous opera houses of the city, is located right here.

The Department of Arts and Culture presents Munich's culture and art scene through festivals, special events and regular programmes of events, with the aim of building bridges between different cultures in our city's society and facilitating intercultural encounters. The cultural activities of the clubs and associations, club rooms, citizens' initiatives, particular facilities and artists in each of the districts are all drawn together and presented to the general public under the banner ‘Wir machen was’ (We're doing something).

Munich is also promoting a lively public discussion about the interdisciplinary aspect of contemporary art. Public places around the city are made available for art and design experimentation. Using exhibitions, workshops and speeches, the Department of Arts and Culture contributes to a better understanding of history and science.
