Queen Beatrix to open 60th edition of Keukenhof

Keukenhof, paragon of beauty

On 18 March 2009, Her Majesty the Queen will officially open the 60th anniversary edition of the international flower exhibition Keukenhof in Lisse. The theme for this anniversary year will be: ‘USA, New Amsterdam – New York, 400’.

On Wednesday, 18 March 2009, Keukenhof will open its gates for the sixtieth time. By the time they close again eight weeks later, more than 800,000 people will have visited the international flower exhibition in Lisse. In welcoming these visitors, Keukenhof will provide a significant contribution to the tourism industry in the region and throughout the Netherlands.

The park’s annual revenues amount to tens of millions of Euros each year. Our suppliers and other related companies add many times that amount in income. More than a hundred flower bulb suppliers provide the bulbs needed each year. More than 43 million people have visited the park since it opened 60 years ago.

Over the past few months, more than seven million flower bulbs have been planted throughout the 32 hectare park, waiting to bloom in all of their glory at the beginning of spring. In addition to the many traditional events, Keukenhof will also be presenting several new developments on the park grounds, where nature and culture combine.

Press credentials will be issued until Monday, 16 March at 16:00. To apply, send an e-mail to: a.gerards@keukenhof.nl, Include your name, medium and position.

Due to the limited space available in the room where the opening is to be held, Keukenhof may require proof of admission for attendance.

Keukenhof will organise a press conference in Dutch and English immediately preceding the opening ceremonies on Wednesday, 18 March.
