IndiGo expands network by adding Lucknow as new sector


IndiGo has launched a new sector Lucknow, thereby expanding its route network in India. It will introduce two new flights with round trips from Lucknow with effect from July 5. The new daily round trip services will start from Lucknow to Bengaluru (via Patna & Kolkata), Lucknow to Mumbai (via New Delhi), Lucknow to Kolkata (via Patna), Lucknow to New Delhi and Lucknow to Patna. IndiGo will operate 137 daily flights connecting 19 destinations.

IATO to conduct three roadshows in Saudi Arabia and one each in Kuwait and Qatar


In a recent development as confirmed by Vijay Thakur, president, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), Ministry of Tourism, the Government of India has approved three roadshows to be organised at Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khober, all in Saudi Arabia as against one that was planned for Riyadh, the Saudi capital. Two more roadshows that are lined up in the Middle East will be organised in Kuwait and Doha in Qatar. According to Gaur Kanjilal, executive director, IATO, the association would plan to organise these shows in the month of September or October.

IAAI files fresh case on Zero commission saying Karnataka High Court case doesn't address this issue

A fresh writ petition has been filed in the High Court of Kerala on June 15, which came for admission on June 16, 2009. According to a recent IATA Agents Association of India (IAAI) communiqué, the Court has directed the central Government of India to furnish report on two IAAI memoranda; first dated February 23, 2009, to minister of civil aviation and the second dated May 28, to minister of civil aviation, secretary and DGCA. The Court directed the assistant solicitor general of India represented for central government (respondent 1 - the secretary, ministry of civil aviation) & (respondent 2 - the director-general of civil aviation) to report to the Court what decision they have taken on the above mentioned memorandums. The case is next scheduled for June 29 for hearing.

The package is also aimed to tap group as well as FIT segments. Besides the price benefit (50 per cent off on normal fare for second guest), there are some more frill benefits like complimentary evening cocktails, free upgrades, etc, informed Sumit Banerji, senior manager, sales and marketing, Star Cruises. According to him, the company encourages travellers to book their Star Cruises vacation through a travel agent of their choice. The company is confident that this package will be effective in achieving its business goal for the quarter, July - Sept, 2009.

Radisson opens its first hotel in Gurgaon


Radisson Suites Gurgaon recently opened its doors for business at B Block, Sushant Lok, Phase 1, Gurgaon. A mixed-use commercial facility, this property combines convention centre, office space and serviced rooms and suites. It has been developed by Bestech Hospitalities. The ground floor features eight types of convention hall facilities that can accommodate up to 800 people. Radisson Suites offers 10000 sq ft. of flexible function. Recently, Kumari Selja, union minister for tourism, unveiled a slew of promotional plans to tackle various developmental matters. These plans were unveiled in an interaction with the veterans of the Indian tourism industry. Some of declarations include strengthening the market development assistance (MDA) scheme, promoting of year 2009 as 'Visit India Year', and extending support for roadshows to promote domestic tourism.

Ahmed pitches for promoting the Rural Tourism Scheme

Sultan Ahmed, the minister of state for tourism, in an interaction with the leaders of the Indian tourism industry, pitched for promoting the Rural Tourism Scheme. He said, "Tourism can act as a catalyst for the development of the rural sector. The Rural Tourism Scheme has been announced for positioning the rural tourism product of the country," he informed.

Sikkim Tourism ties up with Singapore firm to develop infrastructure


Recently, Sikkim Tourism signed an agreement with a Singaporean consultancy firm called Master Consult Services in a bid to build a strong infrastructure for village, eco and adventure tourism in state. According to SBS Bhadauria, secretary tourism, Sikkim, the company will prepare a master plan for next 10 years, so that the state can cater to an increasing demand of capacity building and product development pertaining to tourism in the state. He also informed that Uttrey in West Sikkim will be developed as an eco and adventure tourism hub. Uttrey is a beautiful green valley and is at an hour’s drive from Pelling. Sikkim received about five lakh tourists (both domestic and international) in 2008 and is expecting a rise of one lakh tourists in 2009.

PM commemorates anniversary of Air India 182 tragedy

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has called upon every one to work to rid the world of terrorism as he commemorated the anniversary of the Air India flight 182 tragedy.

On June 23, 1985. Air India Flight 182 left Montreal via London for Delhi . It never reached its destination. The aeroplane exploded and crashed into the Atlantic about two hundred kilometres from the coast of Cork , Ireland. Of the three hundred and-twenty nine persons on board, no one survived.

The Prime Minister in his commemoration message said “today on the eve of the twenty fourth anniversary of that tragic event, as we honour the memory of the innocent victims of this grim tragedy, the best homage we can pay to them is to work earnestly to rid the world of the scourge of terrorism.

On this sad day, my thoughts go out to all those who lost their loved ones in the crash.”

Railway enquiry through ‘SMS’ on 139-‘Rail Sampark’

“139 – Rail Sampark”, the authorized enquiry for Indian Railway has recently introduced the facility of Railway enquiry through SMS which is a premium service. The users can obtain information regarding PNR status, fare, seat availability and arrival/departure by sending SMS in the specified syntax to 139. The syntax for ticket status enquiry is –PNR10 digit PNR Number and SMS to 139 (for example PNR 1234567890). Details of the procedures for SMS can be accessed from the website www.indianrailways.gov.in or www.irctc.co.in .

The service has been launched by Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of railways. This Railway enquiry service operates on the number 139 which can be dialed from the landline/mobile phones all over the country without prefixing the STD code. The service has become highly popular with the Railway users. As on date more than 7.5 lakh calls per day are being received on 139 from all across the country. The idea of 139 is to connect with masses, a service that is meant for all and is effectively and easily available. Round the clock call centre support is available in eleven regional languages across India.

The Services include enquiries pertaining to arrival/departure of trains, PNR reservation of berth status and fare enquiry. Apart from these, the number 139 can also be accessed to book a train ticket where payment is made through a cash card over phone and the ticket is delivered/emailed to the user.
